A day from today, 2021, will be a year in history..a time behind us.

With the year at the very end, so many of us have begun to retrospect about ourselves and our lives over the past year.

We find ourselves separating the things and people we are most grateful for, the growth we have experienced, the goals we have achieved, the hopes and dreams that did not materialise for one reason or another, the changes we enacted and the ones life forced upon us and so on. Conclusively, we find ourselves reflecting on the many big and small wins this year brought us. Most of us are separating these things to grade ourselves, the year, and how well we have done. Some of us are doing it because it empowers us to practice acts of awareness, mindfulness, and gratitude. Some of us are doing it because it helps us pinpoint our goals for the upcoming year. Also important, some of us are doing it simply because we feel prone to it. Whatever your reason for doing it, I hope that with all things considered, reflecting helps you count your blessings and see just how much you have tried, how much you have achieved and how very far you have come.

On things we are grateful for

Life can be a long and tedious journey. As you move forward, it is essential to practice gratitude. In practising gratitude, we allow ourselves to recognise our growth and identify new reasons to keep going.

I do not doubt that we all have things we are thankful for. What are you most grateful for this year? In reflecting, I hope it is not difficult to recognise the things that lifted you high this year. If you did not do it before, I hope you realise that there is so much you should be and are thankful for.

On dreams and hopes that did not materialise

Gearing up for the year’s end can be extremely hard on some. It is a time when sitting with ourselves, we have to accept that the year unfolded (almost) nothing like we hoped and planned it would, that essentially, we cannot plan our way through life like we have been made to believe, that we have no absolute control over most of the things that matter most to us. Life can get overwhelming, and you may have lost sight of some of your set goals along the way. Also, you may have been forced by circumstances to let go of some of your dreams.

This is a reminder that when we find ourselves facing such (unfavourable) realities, we do it in unconditional love for ourselves and our lives — in gentle kindness, empathy and understanding. Living is not always the easiest; the most we can do is have our own backs through and through.

On sudden changes and things lost

Between last year and this year, I experienced some of the most sudden and significant changes and losses of my life. It is (almost) scary how one (seemingly tiny) change and/or loss can reshape your entire life and human experience.

We may have had to endure severe changes in our careers and personal lives. We may have suffered some of these losses due to things altogether out of your control; some we may have caused and/or failed to prevent or fix. Whatever it may be, I hope that if you haven’t, you come to terms with the fact that this is life, and this is how it works.

As you go forward, you may realise that some losses and changes were indeed “for the best”. Some you might discover you wish you never experience. Through and through, I hope you’re kind to yourself. I hope that for every good thing you have lost, life gifts you double.

On new year’s resolutions

I view the new year as an opportunity for a fresh start– an opportunity to begin anew or pick up where we left off, depending on what we want and what works for us. Currently, we are in the period when most of us sit with ourselves to identify the things we want to achieve in the coming year. As we engage in this process, I feel it necessary to remind myself and you that taking a focused approach enables us to achieve our goals and empowers us to attain the most satisfactory results.

Being a member of EXPEERTS.club — a space whose very foundation lies on intentional and focused goal-setting paired with aligned and guided actions has made me see the profound power in taking a directed goal-setting and goal-getting approach.

At EXPEERTS.club, we use — among others — the OKRs method for goal-setting. OKRs, which stands for “Objectives and Key Results”, is a collaborative goal-setting method that has proven effective in helping teams and individuals set challenging and ambitious goals with measurable results. In the words of our Founder, “excellent maximisation of the OKRs requires the investment of intentional time and effort which you would discover is totally worth it”. At EXPEERTS.club, usage of this method helps us achieve our goals and focus on the really important things.

To learn more about OKRs and how to get the best results, we recommend you check out the book “Radical Focus” by Christina Wodtke. It is a Book worthwhile! ;)

Happy New Year!
