What is your North Star?
Finding your North Star

Have you discovered your North Star yet?
Funny that I am asking you this question since this is a concept I learned about only a couple of weeks ago. In the past, I heard Cloed, my boss, mention the “North Star ‘’ and its importance to one’s goals and achievements. Far beyond “mention”, I heard Cloed go on about the concept time and time again. I soon came to understand that the North Star was something very important to her. As time went on, I also came to realise that it wasn’t just Cloed. EXPEERTS.club and the foundations upon which it stands was given birth to by the inspiration and guidance of this concept.
It then became my goal to fully understand for myself what Cloed meant when she spoke of “finding your North Star ‘’ and why she encouraged us all at EXPEERTS to do the same. For me, this was important because if 99 spectacularly powerful women were so captured by the values of this term and what it offered them, enough to dedicate themselves to finding their own, I did not want to be left behind.
What is this “North Star” which I have been going on about for what feels like aeons now and the underlying concept of it all? As a resource I found online very simply and explicitly puts it, “The North Star is a symbol of inspiration and hope. It is a landmark, or sky marker, that helps those who follow it determine direction as it glows brightly to guide and lead toward an intended destination(Gamble Thread, 2019).” As Cloed puts it, “The North Star is like your personal North. It is the long term goal that your compass needle points to. It is an end goal that is far away but still known and decided by you. It guides you in all you do and ensures that you do things in alignment with your higher purpose”.
- What are you looking to achieve in life?
- What purpose do you aim to fulfil?
- What impact do you hope to make?
- What do you want your legacy to be?
- What is your vision and mission in this life?
If you have already found the answers to those questions, now ask yourself,
- “Am I doing the things I need to do to reach the end goal I have identified?”
- “Are my actions aligned with my goal?”
- “Are the values I let lead me ones that will eventually lead me to fulfil my higher purpose?”
- “Do my more minor, short term goals reflect what I aim to achieve in the long run?”
Your North Star is the light at the end of the tunnel. It encompasses everything you should do, every value you should uphold, and the short term goals you should set. It is your vision and life’s mission. When you follow your North Star, everything you do aligns with yourself and your vision. It guides you each step of the way.
The North Star can mean and be different things to different individuals. It can be personal; it can be organisational; it can be cultural or societal. At EXPEERTS.club, our North Star is to build a fair and equal world for women as it is for men. This higher purpose, the North Star, leads us to take steps, engage in practices, and uphold values that would align us with the requirement of this goal.
At EXPEERTS.club, we start by working on our mindset, toolsets and skillsets. We support each other unconditionally in small accountability teams to reach our ambitious goals and find the place where each of us will have the most power and impact.
